A mother has been released from the hospital following a violent crash during rush hour on I-65 last Friday. Her two young children remain in the hospital.
Police said the driver of an RV pulling a horse trailer said he meant to hit the brake but accidentally pushed on the gas pedal sending the RV into the van carrying the mother, her husband and their children.
The RV pushed the van down the highway, plowing into at least four other vehicles and eventually the cement barrier. The accident scene stretched for more than two football fields ( read more ).
The mother, 36-year-old Erin McCormick, has been released from the hospital. Her children, ages two and four, remain at Riley Hospital recovering from major injuries.
McCormick's husband was also in the van but police said he was not injured. The family is from Round Lake, Illinois. They were headed to Disney World.
The RV driver, 72-year-old Charles Walker, was cited for towing a trailer in the fast lane, driving a vehicle-trailer combo that's too long and driving too fast for traffic conditions.
