INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Metro police say a 14-month-old girl is in grave condition after
suffering hours of physical abuse at the hands of her mother's
boyfriend.
A friend of the 21-year-old mother, who police said witnessed at
least a portion of the beating, drove the woman and her daughter to
the emergency room at St. Vincent Hospital around 4:30 Wednesday
afternoon.
Police took the mother's 18-year-old boyfriend into custody
after he showed up in the waiting room at St. Vincent. Police
believe the man used an unknown blunt object to beat the woman and
her baby over a period of several hours. The incident apparently
took place at an apartment at 2105 Amerherst, which is near 71st
and Michigan Road.
Police said the mother, who is currently pregnant, is in stable
condition and may be released from the hospital Wednesday
night.
The couple apparently has a history of domestic violence. The
man is believed to have beaten the woman on at least two separate
occasions in the last two days. According to police, the couple has
been together for about a month and during that time, the woman and
her baby have been living with the man and his two children.
Police believe a child discipline issue sparked the violent
episode between the two.
