INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - A three-year-old boy drowned Tuesday afternoon after someone found him floating in an apartment complex pool. It happened just after four o'clock in the 4900 block of Red Horizon Boulevard at the Horizons Apartments.
Metro police identified the boy as Sir Isaiah Inman. Investigators said it's puzzling how Inman ended up in the pool since a fence surrounds it and the pool's gate was locked.
"A 10-year-old who was playing out here in the playground walked by the pool out here and noticed the three-year-old floating," said Lt. Jeff Duhamell with IMPD.
Investigators said the teen immediately ran home to get help. Two maintenance workers at the home responded first.
"They had to climb over the fence, immediately got the three-year-old out of the water," said Lt. Duhamell.
One of the men who responded was Shane Harris.
"For some reason, I just knew what it was. I just grabbed my phone and ran," said Harris.
Harris said when got near the pool he heard the child's mother screaming for help.
"I come running, called 911, jumped the fence, started doing CPR, mouth-to-mouth," Harris said.
Medics rushed Inman to Riley Children's Hospital where he died.
Investigators said they are trying to determine how the boy ended up in the pool. A six-foot fence surrounds it and police said the pool's gate was locked.
"There is padlocks on the entrance and exits of the pool, the actually facility here, the building was locked," said Lt. Duhamell.
People who live in the neighborhood have the same questions.
"I just don't see how they got into the pool," said Brian Mooreman of Indianapolis.
The apartment manager said the pool closed on Sunday.
Investigators said they are interviewing the child's parents to
find out who was watching him.
