INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - The teen who police say opened fire in a crowd of people at the conclusion of last year’s Indiana Black Expo summer celebration entered into a plea agreement Wednesday morning, nearly a year after shots rang out in downtown Indianapolis.
As part of the plea agreement, Shamus Patton , 18, pleaded guilty to an aggravated battery charge and seven counts of battery. The criminal gang activity charge enhancement, meaning he would spend more time behind bars, will be dropped. Patton also pleaded guilty to two counts of criminal recklessness, dangerous possession of a fire arm and one count of criminal gang activity.
The judge ordered a pre-sentencing investigation be conducted. Patton, who has been in jail since his arrest a year ago, will return to the court room on Aug. 3 for sentencing. He faces a sentence of up to 16 years, with a maximum of 10 years served in prison.
He originally faced 12 felony charges and 2 misdemeanors.
