INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Seven people were forced out of their apartment in the 2800 block of Shelby Street due to a fire Sunday morning.

The Indianapolis Fire Department says a resident of the apartment woke up to heavy smoke just before 5 a.m. Sunday. The resident says the fire was coming from his 13-year-old son's bedroom.

The family and their neighbors were able to quickly and safely evacuate the building. The family's two dogs were also safely evacuated from the burning building. However, a pet cat is yet to be accounted for.

Firefighters say the apartment had no working fire detectors.

The family also does not have insurance and has lost all of their belongings.
