Dozens of residents displaced by fire

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - A fire displaced about 80 residents in a northeast side apartment  Thursday morning. 

Investigators say the blaze was accidental and found no sign of arson. It happened at Harrison Point apartments, near 46th Street and Post Road.

Two firefighters were injured while fighting the flames. One suffered a sprained back and the other hurt his leg on a window.

From the sky, burned holes could be seen in the roof of part of the complex.

Jacqueline Dorsey says her daughter, mother and two young children escaped wearing very little.

“I am very happy. The only thing I can do is thank God. I still got my daughter,” Dorsey said. “I still got my kids and I still got my mom.”

Dorsey said her daughter called her from someone else’s phone because hers was destroyed in the fire.

“(She was) screaming at the top of her lungs. The only thing I could hear her say was that the house was on fire,” Dorsey said.

Dorsey’s daughter was babysitting for a friend. At one point, her daughter thought the youngest  child was trapped in the apartment.

“Dee Dee turned around to get the baby but she said the bedroom was blazing and  she couldn't get through,” Dorsey said. “She started screaming, ‘Simone, Simone,’ and the baby ran to her.”

Dorsey’s family lost everything.

The American Red Cross is assisting some of the residents. Investigators said half of the residents who were displaced  will have housing by Thursday night.

Dorsey’s family will be staying with her.

“We are very fortunate,” she said. “Material things you can get back, but a life you can’t.”
