INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - One person was taken to the hospital and 30 people were forced from their home following an early morning apartment fire on the city's east side.

Resident Gevonda Hill told firefighters that she put frozen French fries in hot grease, turned the stove to high and left the room for a minute.  When she returned the kitchen was on fire.

Gevonda grabbed her son and alerted her visiting sister who was asleep in the bedroom. All three evacuated.

3-year-old Dominique Hill was taken to Wishard Hospital for smoke inhalation.

At 2:30 AM Indianapolis firefighters arrived Meadows Apartments 4022 Meadows Drive to find heavy smoke pouring from the second floor apartment. Flames were brought under control in 20 minutes.  Damage is estimated at $20,000.

The apartment below the fire damaged apartment sustained  water and smoke damage.

Power to the apartment building was disconnected due to the fire, displacing all 30 residents.

IFD Victims Assistance is working with residents to find shelter.
