Auto industry could ease manufacturing slowdown

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Indiana manufacturers that had regained about half the jobs lost during the recession have seen their recovery stall, but economists say a strong auto industry could help lessen the impact.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports the state lost an estimated 1,400 manufacturing jobs in September after seeing jobs jump by more than 4,000 in April.

The Indianapolis Business Journal reports that's been followed by several layoff announcements that could signal deeper declines in the final quarter of the year.

Companies like Columbus engine-maker Cummins and Evansville's Accuride have announced cuts.

But economists say the auto industry is expected to continue doing well. Vehicle sales are up, and companies like Honda, Subaru and Chrysler are investing in their Indiana operations as they prepare to expand.
