Ballard, Riggs, IEMS remember medics

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - A press conference was held Sunday afternoon following the deaths of two IEMS medics.

IEMS Private Timothy McCormick and Specialist Paramedic Cody Medley were involved in an accident early Saturday morning. McCormick passed away Saturday . Sunday morning, it was announced Medley had died as well.

At Sunday's press conference, Mayor Greg Ballard, Director of Public Safety Troy Riggs and IEMS officials commented on the tragedy.

"Thank you to the citizens for their compassion," Riggs said.

Medley's grandfather, father and stepmother were at the press conference. His father, Jeff, was wearing an EMT fleece jacket. He addressed those present at the conference.

"We've got some people here that we can be very very proud of. They have been so helpful and so supportive and we very much appreciate that," he said. "I could not be prouder of this boy, of this man right here, man, he's an incredible person and I wish you all could've got to know him."

Sunday morning, Mayor Ballard released the following statement:

"Our community is mourning the loss of Indianapolis EMS Specialist Cody Medley, who passed away due to severe injuries sustained in the major motor vehicle crash that also killed his EMT partner, IEMS Private Timothy McCormick. These first responders were devoted to helping others and risked their own lives to do so every day on the job. We stand by our IEMS family to give them strength in this time of grief."

Mike Reeves, President of the Indiana Professional Firefighters Union Local 416 talked to 24-Hour News 8's Walter Allen.

"Anytime you lose one of your brothers it's especially tough and sad for us in the field."

Flags are at half-staff and teddy bears and flowers mark the accident site.

"We have lost two members of our service staff, passionate, skilled young men in a tragic accident and we're upset," said Kelly Apple, District President of Indianapolis EMS Union 416.

"Both gentlemen were big volunteers for our service, did a lot of community outreach and they were very vibrant members of our team," said IEMS Chief Charles Miramonti.

Funeral arrangements for both McCormick and Medley will likely happen out of state. A local memorial will possibly take place later this week.

McCormick and Medley's names will be added to the wall of the Firefighters Memorial sometime later this year.
