INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Apartments and retail space are planned for the space on Mass Ave to be vacated by Indianapolis Fire Department.
Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard unveiled the $43 million project Thursday morning. The City County Council approved the investment of $3 million of TIF development money for the project.
Ballard said the proposal, which will include more than 200 apartments and up to 40,000 square feet of retail space, is a great investment for the city's future.
"The Mass Ave retailers have wanted to this for 20 years, so now it's really important. I'm really glad we got everything taken care of through the council. I'm just proud this is happening," he said.
The project won’t begin soon, though, because the Indianapolis Fire Department still has to relocate its headquarters - which is moving to the former IPS School 97, along with Fire Station No. 7 and the Firefighters Credit Union. Plans for the relocation of the fire station have not yet been set.
