INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - The woman accused of killing her baby by ingesting rat poison while pregnant left the Marion County Jail on Tuesday with a smile.
Bei Bei Shuai is facing murder and feticide charges in connection with the incident. She gave birth to the baby, but the child later died.
Shuai, outside of the jail, said she was “very happy” after greeting reporters with an enthusiastic “good morning.” Lawyers had been fighting for Shuai to be released on bond, arguing that her behavior was tied to being suicidal.
“Today is a day of celebration,” Shuai’s attorney, Linda Pence, said. “This wonderful woman is out of jail, she’s been released, and we will be following all the restrictions.”
Shuai also had an emotional reunion with loved ones outside of the jail. They met her outside with tearful hugs.
Pence thanked the people who helped Shuai be released ahead of her trial. She said National Advocates for Pregnant Women provided additional lawyers to help on the case.
Shuai’s lawyer said after going through the procedures necessary to have Shuai released, the two were going to call Shuai’s mother together.
