INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Family and friends gathered Saturday to say their final goodbyes to Indianapolis radio personality ‘Big John’ Gillis.

Gillis passed away last Friday night at his home.

The 65-year-old broadcaster was best known as a traffic reporter for WIBC. ‘Big John’ Gillis brought Indianapolis commuters up-to-date traffic every morning from the “Whirly Bird” in the sky.

For decades, he was the voice for WIBC until he retired in 2007.

Since then he has spent his time traveling in his motor home and volunteering at the Breakfast Optimist Club of Indianapolis.

Close friend Rick Posson says, Gillis never had children of his own, but loved to help kids in need, and he never met a stranger.
