INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Cyclists kneeled and prayed for safety in front of the Statehouse Monday morning as they prepared to honor the officers who gave their lives to keep Hoosiers safe.
The COPS bicycle ride is an emotional 13-day, 1,000-mile bike ride around Indiana, raising money and awareness for officers in Indiana that have died in the line of duty. This year, the bike ride honors fallen Greenfield Police Officer Will Phillips and fallen Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Officer David Moore.
“David and Will, they deserve this honor, they deserve to be remembered,” said JoAnne Moore, mother of the late David Moore.
The more than 60 riders are raising money that will be used to help out the surviving spouses and children of the officers killed.
Bikers even visit the police agency headquarters where each of the officers served.
“Our promise in COPS is that they will never be forgotten,” said Spencer Moore, father of David Moore.
The truck that will guide the bikers proudly displays the photos of officers Phillips and Moore. It’s a tangible reminder of their sacrifice, as their lives are celebrated by the community and those who loved them most.
The ride will end on Aug. 6 at Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis.
