INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - One of the motorcyclists injured the day Indianapolis police officer David Bisard plowed into them at the stoplight says Wednesday's ruling is a step in the right direction. Mary Mills talked exclusively with 24-Hour News 8 anchor Karen Hensel just after the ruling came down.
Mary Mills and her now-husband Kurt Weekly were on the same motorcycle that day. They both spent months in a coma and learning to walk again. She says Wednesday’s ruling helps in the healing, "I feel like things are finally starting to go in the right direction."
THE QUESTIONS
Sitting in her backyard, Mary Mills has two questions. One for the former prosecutor who dropped DUI charges: "What do you think now Carl Brizzi? Do you think maybe you made a wrong decision and maybe you want to back up on that one?" The other is for Bisard's fellow officers saying, "If it had been anyone else this blood draw would not be in question. I just wonder how much the FOP will continue to back him. What does it say for the FOP?"
Mills also wants to know if the person drawing the blood was not qualified, how did it go unnoticed by so many? She questions, "There were so many police officers, so many lawyers in the room and they should have known. If that's not where he was to get his blood drawn they should have taken him to the right place."
THREE SURVIVORS
On hearing the news the three survivors — Mills, her now-husband Kurt Weekly and Luisa, a former officer herself and the widow of Eric Wells — found comfort but not celebration. Mills shares their conversations saying, "Luisa was very positive about it but doesn't want to get too excited. But she does question the FOP's reasoning for standing by Officer Bisard, and how much further are they going to continue to back him on this? With Kurt, Kurt just wants to see him behind bars." Kurt Weekly keeps his distance on the details because as he continues to deal with brain injuries, it is agitating and upsetting.
But Mills continues to dig deep, questioning. She says, "I feel certain about this — that if it had been me behind the wheel of that car there would be a DUI charge. That's all there is to it.”
Former prosecutor Carl Brizzi declined a request to talk with 24-Hour News 8. Bill Owensby with FOP says he cannot comment yet because attorneys are still looking at Wednesday’s ruling .
