INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - On August 5, a fire badly damaged an apartment at the Abney Lake Apartments near 38th St. and Kessler Blvd.
A month later, on September 5, police discovered a body inside the fire damaged apartment.
The Indianapolis Fire Department says a woman was living in the apartment at the time of the fire.
IFD has not said if that woman has been missing since the fire.
On Wednesday evening, an IMPD detective was in the area looking for a still unnamed missing person.
“[Apartment management] informed her that there may be a body in there because of the smell,” Kendale Adams with IMPD said. “So that detective then went and discovered what she thought were human remains.”
It’s unknown at this point if the remains found are that of the woman who lived in the apartment or someone else.
The identity of the missing person IMPD was searching for is also unknown.
The coroner will perform an autopsy Thursday morning to try to determine how the victim died as well as the age, sex and race of the victim.
Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 317-262-TIPS.
