Boy's music a blessing at Indy hospital

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - An 8-year-old boy is lifting spirits at a central Indiana hospital just by being there for his mom.

Most days, you can see and hear Martin Williamson playing harp in a waiting area of Community East Hospital.

The songs bring smiles from his dad and sisters, who are usually there with him. But hospital staffers, patients and other families seem to enjoy the music, too.
.
Martin said he enjoys their reaction, but it's just a happy side-effect of the real reason he is there:

"Why I'm here is because my mom is in radiation," he said. "And another reason is because I get my harp practice - most of my harp practice - done while my mom is in radiation. So I get two things done in one thing."

Martin's mother, Tammy, is dealing with breast cancer. She said she's grateful that the hospital allows her son to play, and she hopes that the music may spark an interest in the instrument among others.

"It's blessed our family," she said. "And we thought that other families could be interested in the harp and be blessed as well."

Doctors at Community East, 1500 N. Ritter Ave., said her son's songs are a great way for him to be with her and show support during a difficult time.
