INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Downtown Indianapolis’ Capitol Commons has a new name.
Friday, Mayor Greg Ballard rededicated the area near Maryland Street and Capitol Avenue as Hudnut Commons after the city's longest serving mayor.
Bill Hudnut served 16 years in office and oversaw dozens of downtown projects, including the expansion of the Indiana Convention Center and the construction of the RCA Dome.
Friday’s event was a surprise to Hudnut.
“Well, I am very honored,” said Hudnut. “It's very nice and I appreciate it. Long after I'm gone, it will still be here. And that's nice.”
Capitol Commons is located above an underground parking facility.
The garage and green space will undergo $5 million in improvements later this year.
