INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - A car plunged into a retention pond Saturday on the city’s south side and three teens escaped serious injury.
The driver told Indianapolis Fire Department firefighters that she and another car were “being foolish and racing down the street.”
Witnesses say both cars were traveling east on Stop 11 at high speeds, weaving in an out of traffic and attempting to cut one another off, according to a release.
Both drivers attempted to turn into an apartment complex at the same time. One car successfully parked while the other traveled 50 feet down an embankment into the water.
All occupants of the car escaped through the car windows as the car sank.
IFD responded to the scene and had divers in the water within minutes. A towing company was called to pull the vehicle from the water.
Occupants were checked out on the scene and required no transport to the hospital.
Southport Police were unclear at the time what citations would be issued to both drivers.
