INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department say a vehicle was struck by a train Saturday morning.
The incident occurred on South Lynhurst and Bertha Street just after 10 a.m.
Officers say three people were seriously injured in the accident and were taken to Wishard Hospital. One person needed to be cut out of the van.
Wayne Township investigators say a mini van was on the tracks when the westbound train hit it.
"Even though it is a very serious accident, quite a spectacular accident, it could have been a lot worse," Lieutenant Troy Wymer with the Wayne Township Fire Department said. "Very rarely do people survive the impact with a train."
Investigators are not sure if the people in the mini van were wearing seatbelts.
The train's conductor was not hurt.
