CARMEL, Ind. (WISH) - Through traffic will not be permitted to pass in Carmel near Central Park on or after noon August 23rd, according to the City of Carmel Utilities Director of Community Relations Nancy Heck.

A 36-inch water main will be installed under Westfield Boulevard between 106th Street and the east entrance of Central Park.

Through traffic will not be allowed to pass from the north side of 111th Street to the east entrance to Central Park. Local residential traffic will be allowed.

The Central Park entrance will be closed for a few days. However, traffic may be permitted from the north by August 26th. Phases of the project are expected to last 60 days.

Originally, the water main was supposed to be installed in February. The construction plan, however, was changed to keep Westfield open to serve as a detour since there was construction in Central Park. That construction is now complete.

Now, Westfield Boulevard must be closed because the pipe will run directly under the road.

According to Heck, installing the main alongside the road will result in a large amount of mature trees getting destroyed. Installing in under the road will save the trees.
