Changes proposed for small claims court

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - It's time for a change.

That's the recommendation from an Indiana Supreme Court task force regarding small claims courts in local townships.

About 70-thousand cases are filed every year in the nine courts in Marion County. Monday, Circuit Court Judge Louis Rosenberg, unveiled a list of reforms to address the problems.

The changes come after a Supreme Court task force found "significant and widespread problems” in the Marion county court.

Some of the proposed rules include creating easy, uniform paperwork for all courts to use. Also recommended is the waiving of filing fees in full for low-income participants and implementing standard hours of operation for all courts.

The judge will take comments through the mail or electronically through October 5th.

If no changes are made, the new rules will take effect January 1, 2013.
