INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - A four-year-old child is in serious condition after being struck by a pickup truck at the Indiana State Fairgrounds.
State police say that Madalynn Gembala broke away from her mother and stepped into the path of the pickup just after 2 pm Wednesday. The accident happened on an access road on the west side of the fairgrounds. Gembala was hit by the right front tire of the truck. Medics transported her to Riley Hospital.
Police don’t believe the driver was impaired at the time of the accident, but he was transported to Wishard Hospital for drug and alcohol testing.
Police say that this accident is an unfortunate reminder of how quickly children can escape the watchful eye of a parent. They urge drivers to use caution and remain vigilant while in parking lot areas.
