SPEEDWAY, Ind. (WISH) - The Department of Child Services was called to a house in Speedway around 7 p.m. Friday. Dispatch received a call from a neighbor saying the door was open all day, no one came in or out and that a foul odor was coming from there, according to an Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department report.

An officer went out there to check and he found a large amount of trash just inside the door. There were several flies and maggots all around the floor in the kitchen and an overwhelming smell was in the house, according to the report.

For concern of the homeowner, the officer kept looking around the house. He found piles of animal and human feces on the floor, walls and even children’s toys.

Along with finding several piles of feces, the officer saw animals that looked malnourished due to the lack of food and water. Upon seeing this, Indianapolis Animal Control was contacted and responded to the scene to take the animals that were still alive.

The officer continued to search and had to climb over things in the house to get from room to room. The officer made his way to the basement and found empty animal cages and several animal carcasses that appeared to die from malnourishment.

The officer was able to identify the homeowner from the neighbor. The police contacted the homeowner and she said that she moved out of the house two days before and blamed her husband for the mess. The officer also confirmed that the homeowner had two children, ages 5 and 1.

The officer said that the homeowner's statement was contradicted because of the bed sheets used in the last 24 hours, food in the refrigerator, and human feces all around the house.

Police contacted the Department of Child Services and the fire and police departments secured the house as best as possible.
