City-County Council votes to regulate flea markets

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - The Indianapolis City-County Council voted to regulate a popular style of shopping. At it's Monday night meeting, the council approved a plan to regulate flea markets in Marion County.

Supporters hope this helps reduce crime around Marion County.

Maggie Lewis, the council president, introduced a similar proposal several years ago. But, then, she lacked the votes to win its approval. This time, the proposal passed 25-2. If the Mayor signs it, flea markets will be subject to the same regulation and oversight as local pawn shops.

Councilor Leroy Robinson spoke in favor of the proposal Monday night. "In the last few years," he said, "we have seen an increase in home burglaries and property crimes in the areas that are in close proximity to these flea markets and pawn shops."

Lewis and Robinson contend the new rules will combat the problem of stolen or illegal property being sold in Indianapolis flea markets.
