Complete streets ordinance would improve safety on roads

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - The City-County Council approved a plan to add bike lanes, crosswalks, sidewalks, and bus stops to streets currently under construction.

It’s called the Complete Streets Ordinance, and supporters of the plan say that it is long overdue. The goal is to make Indianapolis streets safer for all travelers, whether they are on a bicycle, in a car, or on foot.

Only streets currently being built or undergoing serious rehabilitation are affected by this proposal. Council members say that the cost will not affect the city’s bottom line.

“We are looking at a new way of development,” says council member John Barth. “Right now you can develop streets in a more responsive way to all users. ”

The mayor has not signed the proposal into law, but the Department of Public Works is said to support the plan.
