INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Gov. Mitch Daniels has named a central Indiana county judge and former state trooper to the state appeals court.

Daniels announced Tuesday his selection of Madison Circuit Court Judge Rudy Pyle of Anderson from among three candidates selected by the Judicial Nominating Committee.

The 42-year-old Pyle replaces Judge Carr Darden, who retired last month after 18 years on the court. Pyle was a state trooper before becoming a lawyer. He was a Madison County deputy prosecutor and has been a county judge since 2009.

The 15-member appeals court is the state's second-highest after the state Supreme Court. The appeals court issues roughly 2,500 written opinions each year on criminal and civil cases.
