INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - A fatal crash on northbound Interstate 69 near Fishers had the road closed for about two hours Wednesday afternoon, but the roadway was back open by evening rush hour.
Just before 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, emergency officials were called on a report that a pedestrian had been struck near the 9-mile marker. When Fishers police arrived, they found a deceased woman lying in the ditch along the roadside.
The crash prompted the closure of the northbound lanes around the 5-mile marker, near 116th Street.
Fishers Police Department said the woman had been struck by a semi and killed. The semi driver was not hurt. Officials said a preliminary look at the scene leads them to believe the incident may have been a suicide.
Before the crash, emergency dispatchers had received several calls reporting a woman running in front of vehicles. It is unclear what prompted her to run into I-69 traffic, police said, and the investigation was ongoing Wednesday evening.
