Crews out in full force for winter weather

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - The wintry weather system that closed interstates and canceled flights across parts of the Midwest won't cause nearly those kinds of problems for Central Indiana.

Local road crews said Thursday they're ready for whatever we get.

"We are fully activated for Indy Snow Force. Right now we're just monitoring the forecast very closely," said Indianapolis DPW spokeswoman Lesley Malone.

In Indianapolis, 90 drivers reported to work at 3 p.m. At 11 p.m., another 90 drivers will take over.

State highway crews will also be out in full force.

INDOT crews are scheduled to start pre-treating bridges and overpasses Thursday night, said spokesperson Nathan Riggs.

Riggs says no matter how much hits the ground, the first snow of the season can also be the most dangerous for drivers.

"We typically see a spike in the number of crashes - especially on interstates and things like that,” said Riggs.

It’s a concern especially now - on what is always one of the busiest travel weekends of the year as millions of people start to head to their holiday destination.

"Just take those precautions. Give yourself plenty of time, slow down, take the time you need and also be on the lookout,” said Riggs. “Be defensive against some of those drivers that might not be playing it safe out there."
