INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (WISH) - Authorities have confirmed that the 8-year-old girl who was pulled from a pond on the city's west side Saturday night did not survive.
IFD, Wayne Township FD, and Pike Dive Crews were on the scene at the Bayhead Village Apartments on reports of a child who went missing in a pond Saturday evening.
Witnesses in the area at 38th Street and Bayhead Drive told police an 8-year-old girl may have slipped and fell into the water around 7:15 p.m. Saturday
They say she was possibly trying to find something that had fallen into the water.
Pike and IFD Dive Crews searched extensively for about an hour until they located the girl's body.
The 8-year-old - later identified by her family as Jannah Brown - was pulled from the water at 8:11 p.m. and was transported to Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health.
" I felt real sorry for the mother, it's a real hurt," said neighbor Castro Stone. "It's a loss and you can't get that person back."
DNR confirmed Sunday that the 8-year-old was with her 11-year-old sister at the time. Neither one of them knew how to swim.
An autopsy will be performed to determine the exact cause of death. DNR is not releasing the name of the little girl until both parents have been notified.
