LAWRENCE, Ind. (WISH) - Police in Lawrence are looking for a dog blamed for biting a 10-year-old girl several times, sending her to the hospital.
The attack happened Tuesday afternoon near 75 th Street and Oaklandon Road.
Third-grader Honey Brown says she was walking home from a friend’s house when a black and grey dog with a red collar ran at her.
It came up to her waist.
“The dog was running at me,” said Brown. “My leg got bit, my back got bit. That’s when I just ran.”
Brown ran behind a car, but said she couldn't get away.
“I didn’t think I could make it. I felt like falling down,” she added.
She finally got to a neighbor's house, who let her inside. She says one neighbor came out with pepper spray, another with a broom.
“We heard dogs barking, kids screaming,” said her mom, Heather Cross. “It chased another kid, then attacked a lady and her son.”
A bite to the back took a chunk of Brown's skin. The dog also bit her in the leg and left deep scratch wounds on her back.
An ambulance took Brown to the hospital.
The dog ran away.
“We just want to make sure it doesn’t happen to anybody else; it’s bad enough that it happened to our child,” said Brown.
We looked up some of the laws for dog owners.
In Indiana, you're liable if your dog bites someone else.
You can even be charged with a misdemeanor.
In Lawrence, if your dog is found running around without you there, the first offense will cost you $25 dollars. The second is $75. The third is $150.
“If she hadn’t ran and got into that neighbor’s home… what if she would have fallen?” said her mom. “That dog could have done a lot more damage.”
Lawrence Police and animal control were called, but haven't located the dog.
