INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Hoosiers will soon be able to use credit cards to pay for parking in Indianapolis, mayor Greg Ballard announced Friday.
The city has chosen ACS, a Xerox Company, to operate its public parking system. If approved by the City-County Council, the 50-year $400 million plus deal will create 200 jobs in Indianapolis.
“Because of this proposal, significant infrastructure improvements will be completed in the downtown and Broad Ripple areas, but also Rebuilds Indy in another way-through modernizing our parking system and bringing new convenient technology to Indianapolis,” Mayor Ballard said.
ACS promises to install parking payment machines that accept credit cards on Indianapolis streets.
While the deal could mean more convenience for Hoosiers, it also means parking rates could double in some parts of town. The city points out meter rates have not been increased since 1975. New parking rates would mean paying $1.50 per hour downtown and in Broad Ripple.
