INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - The Department of Public Works is updating their Standard Operating Procedures after the May 1 flood in the Broad Ripple area , the department announced Tuesday.
DPW workers inspected the flood gates on Jan. 17 and left the flood gates opened, as required, upon completion of the inspection. However, the department's system shows the locking system was accidentally left in manual mode rather than electronic operation mode.
Several days in April, the flood gates were opened and closed by unknown people. The flood gates were last closed on April 17 at 9:58 p.m. and remained closed until May 1, when the flood happened .
DPW will now conduct quarterly inspections of all flood gates in Marion County. Federal law requires semi-annual inspections. The department is also installing tamper-proof locks on all manual flood gate systems and retraining employees.
The news comes after three business filed tort claims against the city of Indianapolis for damaged incurred as a result of the flooding.
