INDIANAPOLIS(WISH) - Eight people were evacuated when an east side apartment caught fire Tuesday night.
Shortly before 9 p.m., 12 IFD nits were called to 3022 Webster on a report of a kitchen fire at the Frederick Square Apartments.
Gwendolyn Turnley said she was preparing to fry pork chops when she stepped away from the stove for a brief time. Upon returning, she found a grease fire on her stove that she attempted to cover with a pan lid.
She was unsuccessful and got her children out of the apartment before anyone was injured.
Firefighters were able to bring the blaze under control within 15 minutes.
There was fire and smoke damage to one apartment, extensive smoke and water damage to other units.
Damage is estimated at $70,000.
IFD Victims Assistance was called to coordinate temporary housing with Red Cross.
