INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Sylvia Mccollum from Morgan County beat two bouts of cancer. And Friday, the cancer survivor says she had no problem beating the extreme heat.
“I think we choose the perfect day. Overcast and a breeze,” she said. “I must be living right.”
But some others attending the Indiana State Fair couldn't handle the extreme heat.
Five people were treated for heat related illnesses on opening day at the State Fair. No one was transported to the hospital.
Experts say the misting stations can only do so much to help you cool off.
Carl Rochell with Indianapolis EMS said if fairgoers don't take breaks they could be at risk for heat exhaustion or heat stroke.
“Warning signs you can start to feel dizziness. If you get to the point where you stop sweating that is a severe sign,” Rochelle said.
That's a sign of someone experiencing heat stroke. It can happen to anyone at any age.
The skin will be dry, not sweaty. If you see these symptoms, call for medical help right away.
Rochelle also said sometimes children don't speak up but their body language talks.
Irritability and signs of confusion are warning signs your child needs medical attention.
Rochelle suggested eating lighter meals and keeping water on hand.
