INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - A family of seven became separated after evacuating their burning home late Wednesday night.

Initially, that led firefighters to believe for a short time there were still victims trapped inside.

The family was reunited and  paramedics checked them out for any burns or injuries.

Firefighters said Lino Rivera, his wife and five children suffered slightly from smoke inhalation but signed a medical release declining further treatment.

Fifteen fire units were dispatched to 4011 N. Elizabeth St. shortly before 11 p.m. Wednesday. When they arrived they encountered heavy smoke and flames showing from the back of the house. The blaze was brought under control within 20 minutes.

Damage to the one-story house is estimated at $80,000.

Firefighters said there was a language barrier to sorting out the cause and origin of the fire.

The Indianapolis Fire Department reminds the public to practice home fire drills, to have an evacuation plan and a pre-agreed location to get a head count of family members.
