WAYNE TOWNSHIP, Ind. (WISH) - Wayne Township Firefighters and the Health Department were on the scene of a fire at Heritage Environmental Services after a fire broke out Sunday morning.
The fire broke out around 8:45 a.m. in the 7900 block of West Morris Street.
Firefighters say the fire was under control within 15 minutes. However, the fire was not completely out for almost two hours. Responding officers were decontaminated after battling the fire.
The Wayne Township Fire Department says a chemical leak from a tank was involved in the fire.
Officials say there is no threat to the public. No injuries have been reported and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
“Were going to make sure everything is up and running for the community and everything is safe for the community,” explains Craig Peoples, with the Wayne Township Fire Department. “Really technically it was not a hazmat situation, it was more of a fire situation.”
Fire crews had to go through decontamination, just to make sure everyone walked away from the fire safely.
“Obviously with a plant like this you're walking through it, there's water run off and its on the gear and we don't need that stuff on the gear," says Peoples. "We're going to test the water what have you, officials are helping with that, to make sure nothing got in the gear."
