INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Fire early Monday destroyed the home of a west side family of six.
At 1:12 am, a person going past the two story framed residence at 1034 North Tremont spotted flames, called in the fire, and tried to warn anyone that might be inside.
Fortunately Levia Heffner and her children were not home at the time of the fire.
Heffner, who has been renting the home for approximately two months, arrived home shortly after fire crews arrived.
She confirmed that no one was inside the house as crews began to attack the blaze.
Heavy smoke and flames poured from all sides of the residence.
A stubborn water hydrant delayed initial attack efforts for the first arriving fire companies.
Firefighters began an aggressive interior attack and was able to bring the fire under control within 75 minutes.
Heffner told firefighters that several space heaters and the stove were being used to heat the residence.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Damage is estimated at $45,000. No one was injured.
