INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - One of Indianapolis’ largest conventions kicks off Monday, as thousands of firefighters come to town.
With the convention, fire officials are warning residents particularly in the neighborhood of East 16th Street and Arlington Avenue that smoke may just be part of a drill. In that area, there will be a burn chamber emitting a significant amount of smoke.
Officials expect record attendance for this year’s Fire Department Instructors Conference - the 84th annual - with more than 30,000 firefighters in Indianapolis from around the world.
Organizers say firefighters can use the conference to focus on real-life scenarios so they’re better prepared for everyday situations. They’re learning the latest techniques when it comes to saving lives: both hands-on, and in the classroom.
“You’re getting taught by the best instructors in the world. The instructors come here, learn, and they’re able to take the techniques back,” said T.R. Hagerty, conference division supervisor.
There are more than 150 classroom sessions throughout the week in downtown Indianapolis. Hands-on training sessions run Monday and Tuesday.
Opening ceremonies are Wednesday.
Classroom training will take place at the Convention Center downtown, and other training will happen at Lucas Oil Stadium.
