INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Firefighters say a house fire Sunday afternoon caused by a candle destroyed the home and left a husband and wife in the hospital.
The fire broke out at the home in the 2300 block of Station Street around 3:04 p.m.
The couple told firefighters that the husband, Billy had lit candles in the bedroom while his wife, Dawn was at the store.
Billy said he left the room and when his wife returned home, she saw heavy smoke coming from the back of the home.
The couple evacuated the home with two of their three dogs, both St. Bernard’s named Brutus and Sheba.
Dawn then re-entered the burning structure to find the 3rd dog, a Rottweiler/Pit-bull mix named Bo Bo, but she was pushed back out due to the heat and smoke.
When firefighters arrived, they found the dog, in his cage, and brought him to safety outside.
Billy and Dawn were both transported to Wishard Hospital suffering from minor smoke inhalation after they attempted to save their dog.
The owners did not have renters insurance and the home is a total loss.
