LAWRENCE, Ind. (WISH) - At 8 a.m. Monday, the city of Lawrence will be changing the function of a firehouse. This is due to the layoffs of 24 EMTs, and those positions will be filled by firefighters starting Monday.
Only an ambulance will be at Station 40.
Station 40 will not be able to respond to fire calls. This station was closed Friday and Saturday because of staffing issues - issues the Lawrence Fire Department says were not because a so called "sick out".
Dino Batalis of the Lawrence Fire Department says, “there’s a lot of things that were going on the past couple of days with training and people off due to family leave, so it was a combination of things. Definitely not a sick out," Batalis said. "We have a dedicated bunch of people here and I can guarantee it wasn’t any kind of sick out.”
It's still not known where the fire engine will sit. Monday morning, Engine 40 will be marked out of service and will be used as a back-up.
