INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - An Indianapolis food bank is giving away thousands of portions of organic baby food thanks to a generous donor.
People lined up early Friday morning outside the St. Vincent de Paul food pantry in the 3000 block of East 30th Street. St. Vincent de Paul is one of four food banks in the U.S. that each received 25,000 pouches of the baby food this week.
Don Striegal, one of the food pantry managers, told 24-Hour News 8 Friday morning they had already given away a large amount of the baby food.
Striegal said such donations are always welcome, citing any kind of volume of baby food is pretty rare for them. They have to closely watch expiration dates. Baby food is usually something that has to be closely rationed to families who can prove they actually have a baby in need, according to Striegal.
There are no such requirements with this donation and the expiration date on this product runs through January 2013.
St. Vincent de Paul operates the largest food pantry in the Midwest, serving an average of more than 3,000 households per week with an all volunteer staff.
