INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - A retired Indianapolis firefighter and sole local survivor of the USS Indianapolis has passed away at the age of 92.

Retired Firefighter James E. O’Donnell died Wednesday afternoon at Community North Hospital, according to a release.

O’Donnell was known as the sole local survivor of the sinking of the USS Indianapolis in 1945 and a firefighter for the Indianapolis Fire Department for 35 years.

O’Donnell moved up in IFD from Recruit Firefighter to Private, Chauffer and Lieutenant.

Mayor Greg Ballard released the following statement on the passing of O'Donnell:

"Jimmy O'Donnell personified history and service to this country and city. The sinking of the USS Indianapolis is one of the greatest tragedies in U.S. Naval history. The statue of Jimmy in the City Market Plaza honors his service and that of his shipmates. As a USS Indianapolis survivor and retired firefighter, Jimmy O'Donnell was an American hero and a great citizen of Indianapolis."

A viewing for O'Donnell will be held Sunday at the Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Indianapolis from 3 to 8 p.m. A mass will be held at the church Monday at noon.
