Former President Clinton heads to Indy

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Former President Bill Clinton will be here on Friday to campaign for Democrats John Gregg and Joe Donnelly at a get-out-the-vote rally. To understand why Clinton is coming, you need to go back to the 2008 Indiana primary. The former President traveled around the state campaigning for his wife Hillary, and he was often in the company of John Gregg.

Gregg had been out of politics for six years at the time and says that experience made him hungry for a return. Now Clinton is coming to campaign for him. "I've been friends with the President for many years and literally since 2008 have kept in touch with him," says Gregg, who extended an invitation.

Last year when Clinton made a nonpolitical speech at DePauw University he also took time out to host a campaign fundraiser for Gregg. "He told me then he'd be back," says Gregg, "and in conversations and emails and handwritten notes, he said he'd be back."

Bill Clinton returns with Republican Mike Pence leading in the race for governor and Pence says he's welcome here. "We're glad to see Indiana getting the attention from both political parties," says Pence who also wants to remind Republicans about their ability to vote early.

Gregg, meantime, is hoping that some big name help will pay off on Election day. "There's a lot of things about President Clinton coming here that I think it's gonna give a boost to our campaign," says Gregg, "let people know that I'm a pro-business Democrat."

And just maybe, Gregg hopes, rekindle some of the enthusiasm from 2008.
