INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - An Indianapolis teen recently expelled in connection with what he and his family describe as ongoing bullying was attacked at a downtown Indianapolis mall over the weekend.
Darnell “Dynasty” Young, an openly gay junior at Arsenal Tech High School, said he wanted to scare off bullies, so he took a stun gun to school for protection. His mother, who says IPS administration did nothing when she alerted them about the harassment, armed her son with the device.
In response, the school last week expelled the teen and defended its record on bullying .
After media reports on his expulsion, though, Young ran into more trouble last weekend at Circle Center Mall, when a man recognized him and attacked him, according to police.
According to court documents, Khyran Delay, 34, accosted the teen in the food court at the mall while he was on break from work, calling him derogatory names and striking him in the face.
Delay faces a charge of battery, a Class A misdemeanor.
A rally is planned Tuesday to coincide with an Indianapolis Public Schools board meeting in response to expulsion of Young.
The Indiana Youth Group, an organization that supports LGBT teens, is inviting people to gather at the Veteran’s Memorial Plaza at 5 p.m. for a rally. From there they will walk to the IPS Administration Building at Walnut and Delaware streets, where the meeting begins at 7 p.m.
