INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - A family safely escaped their burning home in the 6300 block of Winslow Drive early Wednesday morning.

Larry Keesee woke up shortly after midnight following a loud noise he heard coming from the area of his grill on the back porch. He looked outside where he saw heavy fire on the porch.

Keesee, along with his two daughters and a friend, were able to get out before fire quickly burned the family's house.

Keesee told firefighters that he and his family had grilled out around 6 that evening, but he had turned off the grill immediately after using it.

Fire crews gained control of the fire 10 minutes after arriving on the scene. The interior of the house was significantly damaged.

The exact cause of the fire is not clear. The family planned to stay with relatives.
