INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Arsenal Tech High School was on lockdown for a bit following a fight on the campus Friday morning.
Indianapolis Public Schools official John Althardt says two fights broke out at 7:30 a.m. outside the auditorium. This is around the same time students were getting off the school bus to get begin the school day.
In one altercation, four girls were involved in a fight and in the second, two boys were fighting. The fights stemmed from an ongoing dispute between the students. It is not yet known if the altercations were related.
When officers tried to break up the fight and clear the crowd, students did not follow orders and police were forced to use pepper spray to disperse the crowd. Since the pepper spray was used outdoors, no medical attention was required.
Officials say two of the four girls were arrested. All six students may be subject to disciplinary action by the school. Furthermore, expulsion may be a punishment.
One student was injured and taken to a nearby hospital as a precautionary measure. However, it is not yet clear if it was related to the fight or if she suffered from a pre-existing medical condition.
The school was placed on lockdown to "assist students in getting to class, help them to focus on the day ahead and reduce any chance of escalation from the original fight," Althardt said.
Althardt also said this kind of behavior will not be tolerated by IPS.
