INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Some Hoosiers left their cars at home Friday to participate in Bike to Work Day.

Dozens of bicyclists traveled to Monument Circle where they enjoyed free bike parking, breakfast and prizes.

Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard was among those who commuted to work by bike.

Even IndyCar driver Vitor Meira took time out as he prepares for a busy day at the track.

“I woke up and had a bunch of friends who were doing it already, friends from ZIPP, why not, it's better than, staying in bed doing nothing, so it's good and I was impressed with the amount of people here in downtown,” said Meira.

Organizers say the goal is to promote bicycle commuting as a viable mode of transportation.

Mayor Ballard says this is the first year Indianapolis has been designated a bicycle friendly city.
