INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - An elderly man was rescued from his burning home just after midnight Sunday.
The man's neighbor, John Melton, told firefighters that he heard smoke detectors go off in his apartment building and quickly evacuated the area.
When Melton got outside, he heard his neighbor yelling for help out of his window. The man was unable to leave his apartment through the front door and could not exit through the window alone due to a medical issue.
He was trapped inside his kitchen with heavy smoke and fire. Melton pulled the man from his first-story window.
The man told IFD he was lighting grease on his stove and stepped away for a minute, and when he came back the kitchen was on fire.
