INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - A local jeweler is in the hospital after he was shot during a violent robbery at his home.

It happened on the 3500 block of Bay Road North Drive around midnight Sunday.

Neighbors and friends identify the victim as Gary Thrapp, a well-known local jeweler.

Thrapp owns G. Thrapp Jewelers on 56th and Illinois. Employees of businesses around the store say Thrapp is an integral and important part of the area. He's been there for nearly 30 years.

Police say Thrapp was home with his wife, when two suspects got in through what is believed to be his back patio door.

At least one of them had a gun, and they say Thrapp was shot twice in the abdomen.

A family member told 24-Hour News 8 on the phone Sunday Thrapp was doing quote “fine.”

Police say Thrapp was taken to the hospital in serious but stable condition, and underwent surgery Sunday morning.

Detectives are releasing few details about the case. They won’t comment on what happened inside the home.

Police reports show one of the suspects is described as a black man wearing dark clothing. Reports don’t release any details about the second suspect at all.

Police also aren’t saying whether this was a random or targeted crime.

The police report does show the suspects got away with an unknown amount of jewelry.

Kyle Simmons lives nearby, and says she went outside to see what was happening.

“I think everybody is so surprised about what went on,” she said.

Neighbor Heather Holt says there have been burglaries in this neighborhood before, but never anything like this.

“Over the spring and early summer there were a lot of break-ins through the back of the homes,” Holt described.

The neighborhood has security cameras, but police wouldn't comment on whether the cameras caught anything - or anyone.

For now, the two suspects are on the run, and are considered armed and dangerous. IMPD is asking anyone with information on this incident to call Crime Stoppers at 317-262-8477.
