INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department is investigating a car accident that involved a stolen vehicle and left a woman in critical condition.
Police attempted to stop a gold 2001 Dodge Stratus that had been reported stolen near the intersection of Harding and Howard street early Friday morning. The driver of the vehicle did not stop for police and fled down Harding and Troy Avenue.
The woman has been identified as 22-year-old Erica Shelton of Indianapolis.
Officers lost sight of the vehicle and turned off their emergency signals to see if the suspect possibly abandoned the car. While searching, officers saw smoke. Shelton had lost control of the vehicle and drove it into a pole.
Shelton was ejected from the car and suffered serious injuries. IMPD called for medical assistance and the woman was transported to Wishard Memorial Hospital in critical condition.
Shelton currently has active warrants for dealing and possession of Methamphetamine.
